This is a fun technique! Below is a picture of a feminine and masculine card using this technique: Notice the envelopes.....
You simply take a scratch piece of card stock with a straight edge and sponge color onto your card creating a grid. I used Crumb cake on Whisper White card stock. Then sponge around the edges. (I only did this on about half of the card to leave room for the 'Happy Birthday') I then used post it notes for each section and stamped. (Each section at a time) You can see I created 5 sections on each card, but you can do as many or as little as you want. Here are some close ups:
